Marvel's Doctor Strange Concept Art Explores The Mirror Dimension
In the film, Doctor Stephen Strange made a critical mistake when he took a magic-on-magic fight into the Mirror Dimension, a place where the time-hating Kaecilius, a Master of the Mystic Arts, and his well-trained followers had an advantage over the newly-appointed master of the New York sanctum. Luckily for Doctor Strange, his mentor Mordo helps him during the mind-bending action sequence that featured New York City — skyscrapers and all — bending and folding.
“When Strange and Mordo run out of the New York Sanctum, for example, we have the exterior of the building starting to deconstruct into smaller and smaller component parts and duplicating,” ILM visual effects supervisor Richard Bluff told IndieWire. “And after revealing gaps, we grow out of the [curve-shaped] Menger sponge or [geometrically complex] Mandelbrot fractals.” He added, “As the scene progresses, we move to a larger scale event of twisting into itself. We were trying to convey a cat-and-mouse chase where the fractal environment serves as the mousetrap.”
Before the digital artist ever began working on it, the Mirror Dimension had to be conceptualized by the film's super-talented art department. Concept artist and matte painter Olivier Pron, a key member of that department, worked on that mind-blowing sequence and has shared a collection of his artwork. From Marvel comes DOCTOR STRANGE, the story of world-famous neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange whose life changes forever after a horrific car accident robs him of the use of his hands.
