Game Of Thrones, Star Wars Lead Internet's Top Fandoms Of 2016

The Internet has been good for many things, and fandoms have much to be thankful for when it comes to online mobility. These days, fans no longer need to travel to pop culture conventions or write to ‘zines when they want to geek out over their show or movie of choice. It is as simple as logging online and posting fan-art or more nowadays. Over the past year, plenty of fandoms have been vocal whether they are cheering for sports, television, film, or more. And, now, one intrepid site has ranked the most active fandoms of 2016 with some eye-raising results.
When it comes to entertainment, Star Wars was the one to beat at the second spot. The iconic franchise has experience a surge in popularity since Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens hit theaters. Next week, the franchise’s first spin-off will hit cinemas thanks to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and it looks like the Internet is buzzing about the release.
As for television, Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead reigned supreme with their fourth and seventh spot rankings. The HBO series was the talk of the industry when its latest season wrapped with an explosive and deadly finale. And, of course, The Walking Dead did much the same with its Season 7 premiere. The gory, tragic season starter left fans in mourning as two of the show’s main characters met a violent end thanks to Negan’s bat Lucille.
At tenth place, Harry Potter made a comeback after years of silence. The franchise roared back to life when JK Rowling helped bring the franchise’s first stage play to life in London’s West End. The play was novelized into an eighth Harry Potter book subtitled “The Cursed Child” - and that was only the start of Harry’s comeback. The franchise recently branched out with its first spin-off, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and the magical film earned rave reviews from fans and critics alike.star-wars-game-of-thrones
