First Draft Of Rogue One Script Teased An Iconic Star Wars Line

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was released in theaters this past weekend, and it had a monster debut.
The film was loved by fans of the Star Wars franchise, as well as many other movie goers in attendance. Even though Rogue One took place outside of the Star Wars Saga films, it still had plenty of ties, references, and Easter Eggs linking it to the older movies, as well as the various Star Wars cartoons.
According to Gary Whitta, one of Rogue One's screenwriters, the first draft of the film also contained a nod to one of the most iconic lines from Star Wars lore.
On Twitter, Whitta announced that the original script for Rogue One contained Nerf-Herders. That's right, stuck up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf-herders.
If you recall, Leia calls Han this exact name in Empire Strikes Back, and the line is meant to be an incredible insult. Even though fans weren't sure what a nerf was, the reactions of the characters made it evident that herding them was not a glorified profession.
In the Marvel comic Star Wars #17, they did manage to include nerf-herding into their story. In the issue, Han and Luke are caught up in a herd of nerfs, and it is revealed that the creatures look a lot like four-horned oxen.

The nerf-herders didn't make it into the final version of the script, but it's nice to know that the writing team was doing whatever they could to tie into the classic films.
