During Entertainment Weekly's Spoiler Room -- wherein all your pop culture related questions are answered -- Clark Gregg cheekily teased that episode six's big cliffhanger isn't so cut and dry. He obviously can't give away too many details, but the answer to what happened is a bit more complicated
In the busy Season 4, Coulson and gang have been chasing Lucy, a ghost who seeks to finish her life's work and create matter out of nothing. A lab accident caused Lucy and her team to become ghosts, and prompting her to go on a murderous quest to find the Darkhold, an evil spell book that could restore her to life (and do a bunch of other evil things). She kidnapped Eli Morrow, the last living member of her research team and uncle to Ghost Rider, to help complete her experiments.
Episode 6 revealed that Eli isn't such a good guy after all and was behind the "accident" that killed Lucy and her team. He's got some plans of his own and recreates the experiment in the present day. This causes an explosion that catches Coulson, Fitz, and Robbie. Eli succeeds in his experiments, but the trio has disappeared.
Well, now we at least know that they aren't dead, but most of us probably already knew that. Coulson already did the "come back from the dead thing" and he probably isn't too keen to do it again. As for what Eli's explosion could have done to them, that's a bit more unclear. It's more than likely that the three of them were transported somewhere, but where exactly? Doctor Strange just introduced the idea of other dimensions to the MCU, so could Coulson no longer be on this plane of existence? If that's the case then he and Fitz can add "other dimension" to the list of exotic places they've traveled.
